History of the city of Torrance

The city of Torrance is part of a Spanish land Grant given to the Dominguez Family known as the Rancho San Pedro. In 1887 the land was divided up by the 6 heirs of the Dominguez family.

The City was the brainchild of Jared Sydney Torrance a prominent Southern California businessman who had many  contacts in the business world. Torrance purchased 2800 acres for $980,000 and an additional 730 acres for $550,000.

Jared's idea was to create an industrial city closer to the port by convincing businesses In Los Angeles to move there., The city was founded in officially on June 16, 1914, Torrance was successful persuading many businesses to move here including the electric rail way which provided an avenue to connect the new city,  The Original city (Old Torrance)was incorporated in April 1921. The rest of the city was created from a series of annexations from 1921 to 1963

In the early 1900's the city was surrounded by ranch lands and farms growing beans, potatoes and mushrooms.

In the 1920's A large oil find was located in Torrance and soon oil wells predominated the area.

Torrance was named the “All American City”  by Look magazine in 1956 and profiled the city in its magazine in November 1957. The area experienced a large population growth in 1950's-1960's, most of the homes were built in that time period.

The city headquarters was moved from Post and Satori avenues to its present location in 1956

The Del Amo Fashion center was opened in September of 1950 and was the largest enclosed shopping center in the world when built.

The city of Torrance is the largest city in the South Bay and has a population of approximately 142,000.  Roughly 49% of the population is male and 51% female. The population steadily has increased approximately 3% per year.  The city has a land area of 20.5 mi.². 
 
The median household income was $56,400 in the last census.

There are also several private learning and training centers in city.  The Torrance School system is well known and respected as one of the top school systems in the state. There are four public high schools, North Torrance High, Torrance High, South High and West High.  There are 10 main public schools (elementary and middle schools). 
 
The Del Amo Fashion Center is the largest shopping center in the Western United States. It houses 350 stores with major anchors consisting of the Macy*s, Sears, Robinsons-May, JC Penney, T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and Burlington Coat Factory. Del Amo Mall also has three successful food courts and 12,500 parking spaces. A new outdoor mall expansion was added in 2006.
 
The Madrona Wash is wildlife-protected area of the city located on Sepulveda Boulevard in central Torrance.
 
The Daily Breeze is the largest South Bay newspaper is located in the city on Torrance Blvd.
 
Today 56% of the homes are owner occupied homes and 44 % rental units.
The bulk of Single Family detached Homes are priced between $500,000 - $1,500,000. Condominium starting price are approximately $350,000.
